The Howarth-Wright Graduate Fellowship provides a student in the Master of Architecture Program, after second or third year, the opportunity to study and travel to Frank Lloyd Wright buildings and sites over a minimum of a four-month period. Applicants must demonstrate high academic achievement, interest in the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, and research skills in architectural history. The recipient will publicly present the results of their work at the Faculty, following the completion of the project. As well, they will be expected to pursue publication of the research. This graduate fellowship was created to enable a graduate student in the Master of Architecture program to complete a research project while conducting independent study at Taliesin West, Scottsdale, Arizona.
The approximate value of this award is $11,755. The amount may be divided between 1 to 2 students dependent on the applications received. Additional details about this award may be found online at the Daniels Travel Awards website.
Students are encouraged to submit individual or collaborative contemporary research proposals related to the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. It is not required that the proposal be historical, but only that it consider the breadth of FLW work, interests, and impacts through a contemporary lens. The proposal should have a project description, a work plan schedule, a budget estimate, and description of outcomes.
Previous fellows include the following:
- Lauren Marshall (2017) proposed a study of FLWs kitchens and the role that women have had in re-shaping FLW domestic space.
- Brie Smith and Daniel Fabisoff (2014) who proposed a photographic recovery of FLW works as ruins.
- Jesse C Jackson and Luke Stern (2008), who studied FLWs fabrication techniques in the Prairie houses and culminated in an exhibition installation of contemporary interpretations using contemporary techniques.
- Jimenez Lai (2005) who traveled to FLW projects and developed a comic book narrative inspired by a futurist Broadacre City.
